Whereas other beaches become very busy very quickly, on Texel you have plenty of space even on a beautiful summer’s day. To build sandcastles, fly a kite, go sand yachting or to enjoy the sunshine and the peace and quiet. Or you can go on a nice long hike, or bike ride. And how about jumping on a mountain bike to take on the challenge of Texel’s 100 km MTB route? Texel offers enough to do during any season. It is the perfect place to forget the world and completely recharge.
Being active in nature gives you energy. Texel has over 4300 hectare connected National Park ‘Dunes of Texel’. It consists of dunes, forests, moorland, and wet dune valleys with many hiking trails. The perfect location for a nature boot camp. National Park ‘Dunes of Texel’ has set up a step-by-step boot camp including photos. The start is at the Boskiosk ‘t Turfveld and the entire boot camp lasts an hour. Download the boot camp here. Find out more about ‘active on Texel’.
Cycling is very popular on Texel with more than 140 kilometres of paved cycle track. You can cycle around the island, or straight across it, and discover the most beautiful spots. A fairly new cycle track is the path along the Prins Hendrik sand dyke with a beautiful view of the mud flats and the valley where many birds dwell. There are also new cycle tracks in Polder Waalenburg, that lead, among others, to the new Nature Centre De Marel (Natuurcentrum De Marel). More cycling on Texel and free cycle tracks.
Especially for children between 2 and 10 years, we have the Gnome Path in the Self Picking Garden. You can walk the 900m long path together with Gnome Berry, and learn how a little seed is turned into the most delicious Gnome jam. Gnome Hats and Gnome jam are available at the Farm Shop. During the walk, you can pick berries on the Picking route. We recommend a delicious fresh smoothie or some ice cream in the Tea Garden to complete the Gnome Path experience. The Gnome Path is open during the opening hours of the Self Picking Garden, starting from 1 May until 26 October. View more Texel Tips for children.
Thankfully, hiking through nature is always an option. Breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the environment. On De Hoge Berg, you can walk between the Tuunwallen. These embankments are as old as Texel and made from turf. They act as barriers to the pastures and provide the sheep and their young lambs with shelter from the wind, rain and sun. The embankments are nutrient-poor which ensures beautiful flowery vegetation. In addition to the hiking trails that already exist between the Tuunwallen at De Hoge Berg, in 2021 a new beautiful path will be added, which is being constructed at the moment. This trail will join with the already existing hiking trails and will allow you to experience this unique area even better. View more Walking on Texel.
In 2021, Texelactive offers a spectacular new activity: E-Foiling. When you go E-Foiling, you are standing on an electrically powered surf board. But instead of surfing on the water, you float above the water, powered by a silent electric motor. This new sensation can only be experienced in a few places in the Netherlands, and in 2021, also on Texel! For those that can’t manage to keep standing straight, you can also sit on your knees. An extraordinary and unique way to be active on the water. Find out more and reservations or view more water sport tips on Texel.
Would you like to try to SUP (stand up paddleboarding) with your dog? You can do it with just your dog, or with other couples, at the beautiful location at Pole 17. It strengthens the bond with your faithful companion and is a nice refreshing activity on a hot summer’s day. Dog coach Mariska Koenders will be happy to help you. Would you prefer not to go into the water? Go tracking with your dog. Dogs love walks, but it doesn't tire them out. When they have to use their nose, however, they do expend their energy, which is great for both dog and owner! That’s why we recommend to go tracking with your dog (even without prior experience). Find out more about tracking with your dog. Read everything about a holiday on Texel with your dog.
For 2021, there are additional electrically powered off-road wheelchairs available at Pole 17 and Pole 28. Thanks to the Cadweazle and the Strandhopper, the beaches of Texel are more adventurous and accessible for the disabled. The Cadweazle is an off-road wheelchair, which can be used independently. With the Cadweazle, pushing is unnecessary: the wheelchair has a quiet and strong electric motor, which allows the user to easily make their way through the sand and along the shore for about 2 hours. For shorter distances, the “normal” terrain wheelchair is still available. Find out more about an adapted holiday on Texel.
Hoeve Vrij & Blij (Free & Happy Farm) is the place where farmer Jan and Rianne, famous in the Netherlands because of the television programme Boer zoekt Vrouw (the Dutch version of Farmer Wants a Wife), work daily on their farm. Recently, they opened a beautiful farm shop where you can find pure and delicious Texel products. You can look around at the farm and get to know farming life, pet some animals and there’s a fun scavenger hunt including a Farmer’s help certificate with a small surprise. The Farm Shop is absolutely worth a visit! View more culture tips on Texel.
Even though Texel experienced the war relatively quietly, the tensions were palpable. Due to the location of the island, many bunkers were built as part of the occupier’s Atlantic Wall. However, during the night of 5 to 6 April 1945, Texel became the backdrop of “Europe’s last battle field”. At the renovated Texel Aviation and War Museum, you will find lots of information about this dramatic period. There is also a lot of attention for the air war that took place over Texel between 1940 and 1945. More information or chech more culture on Texel.
If you’re looking for information on the best birdwatching areas, where you can find which birds and which species are common on Texel, there’s no better place than the new Nature Centre (Natuurcentrum) De Marel , in polder Waalenburg. There, you can learn much about the Vogelboulevard, polder Waalenburg and of course about the mud flats and the associated (underwater) nature. You can also book a nature excursion by Nature Monuments or one of the bird excursions of the Bird Information Centre (Vogelinformatiecentrum). Directly adjacent to the centre, you can find the play nature of OERRR for children. Around the centre, many hiking trails will be available, including ones for the disabled. The expectation is that De Marel will be open to visitors in the spring of 2021! More birdwatching on Texel.
