Texel is famous for its many sheep. You can see them all over the island. Would you like to hold one of those cute lambs? At the Sheep Farm in Den Burg, you can! Lambs are born almost all year round and they love to be cuddled. You will also get an insight into daily farm life. From shearing sheep to seeing old milking machines.
Sheep Farm Texel is not just any farm; it is a place with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The characteristic Texel stolp farm was built with wood from derelict VOC ships and was used for sheep farming centuries ago. The sheep's wool used to be shorn and used for clothing and blankets, while the sheep's milk was processed into delicious cheese. The old milking installations can still be admired.
The sheep live here in optimal conditions, with as much as 1,000 m² of space per animal outside. Young lambs first stay with their mothers, then move to a group pen and later go out to pasture. Rams are first kept apart for a week to determine who is boss before being allowed to join the flock, otherwise they storm at each other from 30 to 40 metres to establish their ranking!
