Don't wait until the summer holidays, scratch that holiday itch and come to Texel in May. We all live very busy lives, so the May holiday is a lovely opportunity to recharge the batteries. A week on Texel will give you a break from everyday life. And if you’re smart, you may not need to take many holiday days in May as there are often a few public holidays this month too! Take the whole family out during the May holiday and enjoy all the good things Texel has to offer, including Lifeboat Day, when donors can sail on the lifeboat for free.
This May fire, or ‘Meierblis’ in the Texel dialect, dates back to 1789, according to the first written record. When winter gives way to summer, it is time to drive out the winter spirits and make way for the summer ones. This is achieved with the Meierblis, a bonfire made of (unpainted) waste wood and clippings. As night falls on 30 April (if this falls on a Sunday, it is on 29 April), the Meierblissen are lit. There is a public Meierblis in every village. After the fire is lit, visitors gather around the fire to roast potatoes and prepare other food. Meierblis is on the list of intangible Dutch cultural heritage and is definitely worth a visit if you are on Texel during this period.
May is also the best month for birds on Texel. With a bit of luck, more than 170 different bird species can be found on Texel in May. Can you recognise the birds by their sounds?
